Our hands are incredible and capable of so many complex activities, however in modern life we’re using them in simpler ways which some experts believe could have consequences for how we think and feel.

This New York Times article shares research from a professor of behavioral neuroscience at the University of Richmond in Virginia, named Kelly Lambert, who studies effort-based rewards. “With depression, people experience something called learned helplessness, where they feel like it doesn’t matter what they do, nothing ever works,” she said. Lambert hypothesizes that working with your hands stimulates the brain and helps counteract learned helplessness.

While there is still more to be discovered about the relationship between hands-on work and brain health, the article is still worth a read!

Our April exhibit features mythical and fantastical creatures from our local artists!
