Barbara and Robert “Rosey” Rosenthal, award winning printmakers, have been art partners since 1980. They are well-known throughout our county and California for their art and for demonstrating printmaking. So often showing and demonstrating together, they are often thought of as one person, “RoseyBarb,” but each has his/her own point of view and explores different media.
For this unique Art Central show Barbara is showing her rich, landscape paintings and Rosey his colorful, gouache paintings. They are so often asked to show their graphic art that they welcomed a chance to exhibit work in other media.”

AN ARTISTIC COMPANIONSHIP
“People are curious about what it’s like for two artists to live and work together. Mostly we have worked side by side on our own ideas in a shared studio. We have occasionally collaborated on a piece of art with interesting results. We have teamed up on a couple of projects– a deck of playing cards and a children’s book. While I have sometimes printed for Rosey or hand-tinted some of his prints, he does most of our framing.
Together we are members and have supported the Central Coast Printmakers and the now San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. We have shown together at various venues, like Studios on the Park in Paso Robles and Visions Gallery in Morro Bay. For Twenty-three years we sold prints and demonstrated the art of etching at the California Renaissance Pleasure Faires. We were also both invited as resident arts to the Fundación Rodriquez-Acosta in Granada, Spain.
Our life together, like artistic expression, is constantly growing and evolving. Love, respect and sharing studio space has kept us supportive and understanding, even if we do wonder who is going to cook the next meal.”
BARBARA ROSENTHAL
“As a painter, printmaker and art teacher, I love bringing nature into the home. Sometimes that means actual objects like rocks, seeds or leaves, but often it is in the form of sketches or completed works of art in pastel, paint, or original print.
The Central Coast of California, my home for the past 40 years, provides endless inspiration. I am lucky to work in other special places, too, including that place within my own head and heart.
Although I was a sociology major at UC Berkeley and have held a variety of jobs, art and the visual world has always been at my core and has inspired and sustained me through the years.”
ROBERT ROSENTHAL
“Robert “Rosey” Rosenthal is nationally known for his mythic-fantasy art and his unique figurative relief prints. His mythic-fantasy etchings combine his love of history, his drawing skills and his enjoyment of myths and fantasy.
A recognized innovator and teacher of traditional intaglio and relief printmaking techniques he has lectured regularly for the Cal Poly Art Department, most of the San Luis Obispo County art organizations and Cuesta College Community Programs.
Locally he is a past director of the San Luis Obispo Art Center now the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, a co-founder and past president of the Central Coast Printmakers, an association that has been the focal point for printmakers of the Central Coast since 1981. For over 4 years he was the outspoken, guiding force of the large, diverse artists’ cooperative, The San Luis Artists’ Gallery, affectionately known as SLAG.
His artistic skills were developed at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, and by 8 years as a Madison Avenue advertising art director, but it took the open, creative “follow your bliss” atmosphere of California to set him free to explore and nurture his own artistic visions.”
