Meet artist Jane Schneider at Art After Dark

Jane Schneider-roshi has been studying Buddhism that spans seven decades.  She started her studies with Shunryu Suzuki-roshi in 1967 at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, and took her Bodhisattva vows in 1969.  Jane was ordained by Richard Baker in 1972 at San Francisco Zen Center.  From 1973 to 1995 Jane and her husband, Peter Schneider-roshi, lived in Japan.  There she studied Rinzai and Soto Zen as well as Shingon and Tendai Buddhism.  She returned to Los Angeles and founded Beginner’s Mind Zen Center (Sho Sin In) in Northridge, Ca with her husband.  In 2009 she received Dharma transmission and in 2017 she was installed as Abbess of Beginner’s Mind Zen Center.  Jane is an accomplished artist and has been representing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in her paintings for the last 40 years.

Also, an opportunity to meet special guest Geshe Lopsang Tseten, who is visiting to raise awareness and funds for Zanskar Girls School

The Zanskar Girls School is adopted by the Deep Roots Himalayan Foundation 501(c)(3) non-profit. Portions of this Art Exhibit will benefit the school, teachers and individual scholarships for traditional education of girls including studies in their native heritage. 

Traveling from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Southern India, Geshe Lopsang Tseten helped initiate the Deep Roots Himalayan Foundation and is coming to Art Central and San Luis Obispo to increase awareness of the remote school that will be the legacy of one Tibetan Monk. He is here with us to bring us understanding of life, Buddhism and the culture of Tibetans. Geshe is a skilled teacher of Tibetan Buddhism and for over 40 years he has been and continues to be a student of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He regularly travels the world to share and teach about individual expression of consciousness, devotion, compassion, and wisdom.
