Art Reception this Saturday – June 4th, 2-4 pm

Almost 50 years ago, a group of young women who wanted to nurture their creative expressions gathered together to share.  They shared art, ideas, information, help, support, and lunch.  There were no rules, leaders, or fees. They had no name, but eventually the term “GROUP,” became the common identifier.  They were never a large group, maybe 13, at the most, and members came and went. But there was a core of 7 who were there at the beginning and still remain.

Today, and for the past 30 years, the same 12 women meet weekly.  They are the GROUP. Over the years, members of the group, individually and together, have had art shows, won awards, taught art to others, and continue to create today.  What started as a need to nurture creative expression became a lifelong need to create.

The GROUP is a collective group of talented women who share a passion for creative expression. Visit Art Central this June and July to see this dynamic show “Out of the Blue”

Artist reception from 2-4 pm on Saturday, June 4th in our gallery.

“Ferguson’s Mechanical Paradox Orrery from 1773” by Chris

“[It shows] people how the Earth maintains its orientation as it orbits the Sun, why seasons happen and summer and winter are reversed between hemispheres. The Orrery illustrates how eclipses can happen when the nodes of the Moon’s orbit intersect light coming from the Sun, and how the nodes and apogee of the Moon’s orbit move over time.” – Armstrong Metal Crafts

NEW! Ardella Swanberg’s specialty is watercolor but she is interested in how other media interact with it. So in this class, she proposes to MIX IT UP! Explore using watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and any other water-soluble media. Each media has unique characteristics. Some play well with others and some don’t. Let’s find out what they do. We can paint watercolor over gouache, add pastel or charcoal, or even acrylic. We will work small on different surfaces to find out what works best. Bring your favorite media and she will supply the rest.

Meagan is offering 3 classes – all will use 8×10″ canvas and acrylic paints. Each painting will include some type of sparkle/glitter at the end. “The reason I like to incorporate glitter is to give students the freedom to create designs with glue before bringing them to me. We add glitter, shake off the extra, and reveal their very own sparkly design and individuality.”  All paintings work on strengthening a steady hand, along with learning the correct techniques of layering and mixing colors.

Printmaking Workshop with Artists Rosey and Barbara Rosenthal

The Central Coast Printmakers will be leading a workshop in printmaking. You will learn the difference between relief and intaglio as you work on a linoleum plate. You will use cutting tools in a way that you can print in relief by hand (as you could continue at home).

You will also be taught to ink your plate in the intaglio method (think etching and engraving) and print it with an etching press. In this way, you will have a good introduction to two common printmaking techniques without the use of acid on a metal plate. Experienced printmakers will enjoy experimenting with this process as well.
