WORKSHOP: MIXED AND UNMIXED MEDIA

TUESDAY, JANUARY 21st920 Bridal Veil
1:30-4:30PM

INSPIRATION AND EXPERIMENTATION
WITH ARDELLA SWANBERG
– Every third Tuesday

FEE: $25 (paid at least 5 days before each class)

Please contact me if you plan to attend! I need to know in advance so I can bring enough of the experimental supplies you will need.

Join me to get inspired and enjoy experimenting the 3rd Tuesday of every month. The goal of this class is to introduce ourselves to media and ideas we have never tried.  Do you want to paint more freely, and to add pizzazz with confidence? One way to achieve this is to acquaint yourself with what different mediums can do. We don’t need brand new paper for this. We can start with covering over paintings that didn’t work or practicing on the backs of old paintings. Some of the things we will explore are texture, mixing pastel with gesso, stamping words or patterns, and adding a third dimension.

Tuesday, January 21:  We will start with watercolor so please bring paper, paints and brushes, etc. and we will experiment with various ways to add texture to watercolor. I will bring stencils, salt, wax and lots of other cool stuff!

Tuesday, February 18:  Bring your painting from January or a new one and your favorite supplies. We’ll add a third dimension to our paintings with acrylic molding paste, gluing mat board supports under shapes and adding sea shells or feathers. I will bring the acrylic molding paste, mat board, and other fun objects. Feel free to bring parts of your own collection of found objects or paper.

Tuesday, March 17:  Bring an old painting or new paper and your painting supplies. We will add fabric and paper to our substrate that we first paint. I will bring some collage paper, music sheets, pieces of cloth, etc. If you have some cloth and paper scraps that you want to use, bring them!

To register, please contact Ardella (Jo) by phone: 805-234-1754 or e-mail: ardellajo@yahoo.com

WORKSHOP: PRINT MAKING

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13THGoldfish
10-4:00PM

RELIEF PRINTING WORKSHOP
WITH TRICIA REICHERT

FEE: $80

Many of the prints that you will see on the walls in this Printmaking exhibit are relief prints. Come along to my workshop to try your hand at making a relief print.

What is a Relief Print?

Relief printing is achieved by rolling ink onto the surface of a carved block. The areas that are carved away will not print, but those shapes of the image that are left will accept the ink and form the final print. The print will be a mirror image of what you see on your printing block!

Come and learn how to design, carve and print a block (relief) print. Any subject can be adapted to work for this printmaking process. Bring along your ideas for the subject, or choose from a variety of mine for this project.

Carving the design is very easy on this soft rubber block and water-based inks will be used in this workshop.

Materials

Rubber print block –  you can buy your block when you come to the workshop

Carving tools  – (I have some extra carving tools, but not enough for everybody)

To enroll, contact Tricia by email: tricia@portraitsandprints.com or phone: 805-473-8961

WORKSHOP: PASTEL
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH or 16THpainting seaside flowers
12:30-3:30PM
PAINTING SEASIDE FLOWERS IN PASTELS
WITH JIM TYLER
FEE: $50
In this Art Central workshop, we’ll cover all of the basics for applying pastels with the side, edge, and ends of the stick; how to layer and blend pastels; the different kinds of pastel and paper; and we’ll talk about how to frame a pastel painting.
What you should bring:
– Your pastels. If you don’t have your own pastels, Art Central sells some great sets. I recommend a set of Sennelier half sticks, as much as your budget allows. A less expensive option is to get a set of 48 hard pastel sticks, although in the long run you’ll probably want to get softer pastels. If you don’t have the budget to buy your own pastels, I have a limited number of sets available to borrow for a fee of $25.
– An 9” x 12” piece of sanded paper, plus a little scrap paper. I recommend UArt 400 – 600 grit. This is also available at Art Central.
– A backboard to mount your paper on. This can be mat-board or foam-core or anything similar. Tape your paper to your board using artists tape or masking tape.
– A rag to keep your fingers clean.
What I’ll provide:
– A reference photo for each student.
– Tables, chairs and table easels.
Please let me know if you have questions. I’ll send out a reminder right before the workshop starts. To reserve a spot, please inquire about availability and then send a check for $50 to the address below or leave a check with Art Central.
